Gimp

Okay, so I downloaded Gimp, because apparently, it's better than Photoshop.
The problem is I have NO idea how to do anything.
Like I can open the picture, and use a couple of the tools, but other than that, I'm clueless.
What the heck is a layer?
Hannah or Bekah an you PLEASE help me?
Or anyone else?
I'm kinda desperate.
Haha.
